On Saturday night our whole class got to go to the Theatre Royal to watch the performance of "Snow White."
Lola had entered a colouring competition and she won! Her prize was free tickets for the whole class to go and see the show.
The show was very funny and we all enjoyed it.

Gardening

This term we are lucky to be doing gardening with Petra. Last week we made coleslaw as the cabbages were ready. We cut the cabbage and grated carrots and apple. We added some raisins and mayonnaise and then we ate! It was delicious!

Hiphop

Today we had a wacky hair day to raise money to send Ben and his hiphop dance group to Melbourne to compete. Ben used to go to CLifton Tce School. They did some awesome moves and at the end we got up and had a go. We hope Ben and his group have fun in Australia.

Washing Day

Today, in Discovery time, we had a washing day. Our Key for Learning was being a team player and cooperating with others. We could wash Judy and Carol's car and the dress up clothes. We made a clothes line from the long skipping rope. Lots of us wanted to wash the cars so we had to think about how we could cooperate and make it fair for everyone. We worked as a team and Judy and Carol got clean cars!

Gardening

We are lucky this term to do gardening with Petra. We go out each Wednesday, in small groups, for half an hour. We have planted seeds, looked at the worm farm and made our own lemon juice. We can't wait until our seeds grow.

Kahurangi Theatre

Yesterday the Kahurangi Theatre came to perform for us. They used poi, rakau and taiaha to tell us about taonga. We really enjoyed watching them. Today, in Discovery time we are going to make our own poi and have a go with rakau.

Muesli Bars

Today we tried two muesli bar recipes as part of our Science Fair investigation. We all helped to make them and then we cooked them in the hall kitchen. We tried both and had a vote on which one we liked best. The apple and cinnamon bars were by far the favourite. Here is the recipe. They were very easy to make. We added dried cranberries as well even though they weren't in the recipe. If you make these at home you won't have any rubbish in your lunch box.

Apple and CInnamon Muesli Bars

125g butter
⅔ cup brown sugar
1 Tab honey
1 cup apple sauce
½ cup plain flour
1 ½ cups rice bubbles
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup coconut
1 cup finely diced dried apple
2 tsp cinnamon
½ cup All Bran (or cornflakes)

Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celsius. Line a 25cm x 30cm swiss roll tin with baking paper.
Combine butter, sugar and honey in small saucepan on a low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool.
Place flour, rolled oats, coconut, diced apple, cinnamon and All Bran in a bowl and mix well. Mix apple sauce into melted butter mixture, then add to dried ingredients. Mix well.
Press mixture firmly into prepared tin. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Baking longer will result in a crunchy muesli bar.
Cool in tin. Cut while still warm as crunchy bars will break up if cut cold. Enjoy!

Today Mary Curnow came to talk to us about rubbish free lunch boxes.
She told us that plastic goes to the dump and can’t be recycled. It can take up to 1 000 years to break down.
Mary had photos of 6 lunch boxes. We sorted them into which had the most rubbish to the least rubbish.
Mary showed us some rubbish. She showed us how much rubbish you get if you buy Shapes in the little bags but if you buy a box of Shapes you only get a box which you can recycle. Also, it’s about $1.50 cheaper.

Bridge Building

We had a challenge in discovery time today - to build a bridge over a crocodile infested river. We came up with lots of different materials to make our bridges. Our key for learning was working together and we all did that to build our bridges.

Puppets

Cross Country

On Wednesday we had our school cross country. We ran up Nature's Way, along the bank, down the hill, along the fence, around the playground and to the finish. It was great fun.

Birds' Nest

In drama we have been to visit Jill who went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Unfortunately a bird had stolen her special bucket and taken it up high in the tree. Jill was afraid of climbing the tree after falling down the hill. So we offered to climb the tree. When we got there a bird was sitting in Jill's bucket. When we asked for it back he got very upset as he had an egg in the nest. We offered to make him his own nest. We went for a walk up Nature's Way and collected things to make a nest. We made them in ice cream containers. On Monday we will take our nests back up the tree and let him choose one.

Discovery Time

In DIscovery time this week we talked about perseverance. We read the story of "The Little Red Hen." She showed perseverance when she made the bread.
We tried to persevere when we tried activities in Discovery time. We decided that perseverence means you keep on trying and don't give up.

Clowns

In art over the last few weeks we have drawn clowns. First we painted the background using sponges and white paint. We then looked at different pictures of clowns and talked about their bright colours. We practised sketching clowns. When we were confident we drew our clown onto our background using sketching pencils. We went over the pencil with black vivid and then used pastels to make our clowns bright and beautiful.

Our Teddies

On Friday we brought our soft toys to school for maths. We introduced our toy to the class and then we compared them to see who had the smallest/tallest and shortest/longest. We then used the interlocking blocks to see how many blocks tall or long our toy was. We loved having our toys at school. They were very well behaved and even came to Junior School assembly with us.

Uma’s Dad, Virat, asked Room 6 to draw some portraits to put in his restaurant, Mumbai Mexico. When we had finished them he asked us to morning tea to thank us for the portraits. So, last Tuesday, we went. First we visited the Nelson Public Library. Margot, the librarian read us a story and then we were allowed to borrow some books. Then we walked to the restaurant on Bridge Street. Virat gave us some yummy food and all the adults tried some of the Indian food. It was all delicious! We had a great time and we would like to thank Virat and Maura for their generosity.

The Sandflats

On Tuesday we went to the sand flats across the road from our school.
We were a bit nervous crossing the busy road but it was o.k. because we held hands and had dads and mums with us.
We went digging for sea creatures in groups.
We found lots of crabs which were all sorts of sizes and colours.
There were worms and snails, also mussels and barnacles and empty shells.
It was very muddy and smelly.
Some people got stuck! Carol had to pull Hayley and her gumboot out of squashy, smelly, sticky mud.
We climbed back over the rocks to go back to school.
We had a good day and we now know what creatures live in the sand flats.

We have started school for the new year. We have all moved through from Room 7 to Room 6 and have settled in so well.
This week we have been talking about rules we have at home and rules we want for our classroom to make it a happy place to be.
We came up with 5 rules that we wanted for Room 6.

We also read a story by Margaret Mahy called "Me and My Dog". We drew a pet that we would like to have at home.

Christmas Tree

We were lucky to be asked to make some decorations to decorate the Nelson Hospital Christmas tree. Rooms 3, 6 and 7 made decorations and today 7 children went to put them on the tree.
The tree looked beautiful and lots of people stopped to look at it while we were decorating.
We had a lot of fun and even got a ride in the buggy.
We hope the tree helps to cheer people up in the hospital.

Hi to all Maggie's relations,
Thank you for all the lovely comments you have posted on our blog. We don't get many comments and we really enjoyed reading them. Your comments were really cool.
Aunty Sarah, we were wondering what it is like in Rumania. Is it warm or cold? What season is it? Do you make snowmen at Christmas time? We found Rumania on the map. Does it mostly rain all the time? What is your house made out of? Is it like our houses in Nelson? Why are you living in Rumainia? Do you like it?

We loved Maggie's story too. Maggie got a Principal's award at the last school assembly for the wonderful words and phrases she uses in her stories.

The Minstrel came to school and sang and told us stories about how to look after our sea life so there will be fish for tomorrow.
He left a fishing rod as a prize for the best fishing story.
Below are the 2 stories chosen from Room 6 to go into the competition.

One day, under the sea, lived an octopus, a puffer fish and a sea butterfly. One day puffer fish found a hook. She was terrified. She hurried to the Guardian of the Sea. It was an octopus.
He said, “What is the matter?”
“People are taking all the fish.”
Octopus was furious. He loved his kingdom. He found Sea Butterfly.
Sea Butterfly said, “Let’s get them!”
So they swam to the other side and found them. With a swish of a tentacle the boats were gone.
“Well done, Octopus. You saved us.”
And they lived happily ever after.

One day I went fishing with my Dad. When my Dad caught a fish and it was too big I said, “Put it back in the water. That fish might be a mama fish and it might have eggs. You have to put it back.”
Then Dad caught a little fish. “It is too little.” I told him to put it back so it could grow.

Folk Dance

In the afternoon we did a show and it was called Folk Dance. Rooms 6 and 7 danced first. Our very first dance was Jiffy Mixer. The second dance was Kotahitanga.

The folk dance was lots of fun. Rooms 3, 4, 6 and 7 did the folk dances. It was hard. Families came to watch us. They had to dance too.

On Tuesday we went to do folk dance. We did Jiffy Mixer and Kotahitanga. Jiffy Mixer is from America. In Kotahitanga we can say "Hei" in a growly voice. Folk dance was fun. At the end we all did some dances together with our families. Mums and Dads and Grandads and Nanas came.

Peter and the Wolf

Yesterday we went to the Theatre Royal. We watched Peter and the Wolf and other dances. The Theatre Royal has been rebuilt. My Dadda helped rebuild the Theatre Royal. They did a really, really great job on the Theatre Royal. The ceiling looked just like a castle.
The cat was the funniest character in Peter and the Wolf. The cat, called Ivan, was my favourite character in Peter and the Wolf. One of the hunters was one of Oliver's big sisters. At home we've got the book and CD of Peter and the Wolf.

Every Friday afternoon we join Room 7 for Discovery Time. We can choose from lots of different activities. This is one of our favourite times of the weeks. The last two weeks our focus has been sharing. We talked about what sharing would look like. At the end of Discovery time we gave examples of friends who had shared.

STRIKE

Yesterday we had three people from "Strike" perform on percussion instruments. They used drums, a marimba, Cook Island drums, and even fire coming from bottles. The liquid that made the fire was made from dragon tears and fairy laughter. It was a fun performance to watch.

On Monday morning we all went to the hall to watch the Java Dance Company perform. There were 4 dancers and they told a story using dance. One of the dancers was Gina who used to go to our school.

"The Wonky Donkey"

On Tuesday of last week we had visiting author, Craig Smith, come and talk to the school. Craig is also a song writer and has a CD of songs which is available at Whitcoulls. His book, “The Wonky Donkey,” was written from one of these songs. “The Wonky Donkey” has been shortlisted for the NZ Post Book Awards as one of the best picture books. The books which have made it to the finals will be displayed in the school library and children will be able to vote for their favourite next term.

On Tuesday Craig Smith came to Clifton Terrace School and sang a song called . . .
“The Wonky Donkey.” It is funny because it has a stinky donkey in it. It starts off like this:
“I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. Hee how.”

We went to the hall to see Craig Smith. He sang some songs and then he sang, “The Wonky Donkey.” It was very funny. I asked him, “Do you have a real donkey?” and he said, “No.”

School Triathlon

Last Friday we had our school triathlon. The Year 3 to Year 6 children ran, biked and swam. We started with a run and the went to the pool to swim two widths and then ran back to the finish line. It was a fun day and Room 6 did really well.

A NEW YEAR

Our school year has just begun with a new teacher and new class. At the moment we are in Room 14 as our classroom, Room 6, is being totally refurbished. We are hoping we can move in soon and unpack all the things in storage. We will put some photos of our new room on the blog when we move in.
We've been busy working out what groups we will be in for reading, writing and maths. We have also decided on the class rules we think will make our room a happy and safe place to learn and play. These are the rules we decided on.

SCIENCE WITH STERLING

On Monday we had a science session with Sterling. We looked at magnets and what they could do.
We learned that the whole Earth is one big magnet. It was great fun experimenting with the magnets and finding out what they can do.

We have been lucky the last week with lots of animal visitors in our room.
We have had a lop-eared rabbit, a 12 week Old English sheepdog puppy,

Sounds Amazing

On Monday, 16th November we visited the display at the museum called Sounds Amazing.
We learned about traditional Maori instruments. There were lots of activities we could try such as a piano to walk on, a slapper fone and chimes. We learned about sound waves and how vibrations cause sound.

For the last few weeks in art we have been designing and making card landscapes. We came up with our own theme and then we designed 3 stages in different heights. We used pastel for bright colours. They all looked amazing!

SEEDS

In Room 6, in term 4, we did some experiments on seeds. We started the experiments on Friday, 30th October. We wrote down what we thought seeds needed to germinate. Then, with our talking partner, we decided which one to test. We tested water, warmth, light and soil.
We planted bean seeds to test our experiments. We found out that seeds need water and warmth to germinate but they don't need soil and light. We were surprised.

PUPPET SHOW

This morning the whole school went to the puppet show of Rumpelstilskin.
Rumpelstilskin looked like he had a sun burnt nose. My favourite character
was the miller's daughter because she was pretty. My favourite part was

An Exciting Day

Last Thursday was a very exciting day. Our 9 Kapa Haka students spent the day at the marae. They did lots of fun activities like making a paua pendant, painting rocks and flax weaving. In the evening they performed to their families and finished with a hangi.
The rest of the class went on a bus to the School of Music to see the NZ Army Band perform. They were awesome! They took us around the world with music. It was very funny and very enjoyable.

Science Fair

We have completed our science fair project and are ready for the exhibition. We have been giving Ozzie, our cockatiel, different fruit and vegetables to see which ones he liked. He has only been eating apple and spinach and we wanted him to have more variety in his diet. We now know lots more fruit and vegetables that Ozzie will eat.

Worm Fritters

On Friday Snakes performed a play called "Worm Fritters." THe teacher, in the play, promised to eat worms if the class won the reading competition for the month. The class did win so the children made worm fritters from a recipe they found on the internet.
Snakes did a terrific job of presenting the play. They all spoke carefully and acted their parts like their characters.

Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles!

In Science this week we blew bubbles. We looked at the rainbow colours in the bubbles. When we put gloves on our hands we could hold the bubbles without them popping. We could even bounce them! We thought this might be because the hairs on the gloves helped to cradle the bubbles. It was awesome fun.

Rockets!

Last Friday in science we made rockets. It was cool. We liked it and we did a lot with it. Some people were finished so they got to fire their rocket and we all went to watch. Some flew a long way. We are going to have a class competition to see which rocket goes the furtherest.

In the cross country race all of the kids ran very well. Lots of kids were cheering with joy and so were the families as well. When the cross country was all done it was Mr Wemyss turn to speak and a lady gave out the prizes. Some kids came first, some came second and some came third.

Tubby and the Orchestra

Last Thursday we went to the hall for a show. Some people showed us different instruments like trombone, clarinet and oboe. They played them for us. There were models of the instruments made from plasticine. We were allowed to hold them. TUBBY is the best. I want to meet you some day. TUBBY is the best musical instrument. Tubby is a tuba.

Last Friday Room 6 led the school assembly. We sang Te Aroha and we sang and signed Kiwi Kids. We laso showed our Maori legend slide shows. Carol said we were awesome with everyone speaking clearly and confidently and all on our best behaviour.

Birds! Birds! Birds!

We are studying about native birds. We are learning lots and lots of new things. We started our study with a trip to Natureland where Imo taught us about what makes birds special. Later that week Eden's Mum brought in their king parrot called Boid. He liked visiting our class and was grumpy when Sue took him home. Eden wrote about king parrots (see the photos) and told us all about Boid.
On Friday we made our bird feeders which we had designed. We hung them outside and some birds came and ate the seed we put out. We have also written reports about birds.
Now we have our own pet bird in our classroom. He (or she) is a baby cockatiel and we are going to name him (or her) later this week. It is so exciting having our own pet bird. Today some of us read stories to him (or her).

Triathlon

On Friday, March 13th our school all took part in a triathlon. The older children ran, biked and swam but we just ran and swam. We all did so well. It was a fun day.

School trip

Last Friday the whole school got on board 6 buses to travel to Rabbit Island. We had an awesome time. We made sand sculptures, went for a walk and swam in the sea. After lunch we had lots of different games including a huge earthball.

We completed our graph study today by making a bar graph from tiny teddy biscuits. Some of us didn't get all the types of teddies. We made our bar graph and then we ate the teddies. That was the best part!

A New Friend

We have a new friend at our school. During the holidays a rabbit (or hare?) arrived in the playground. He is very friendly and often sits in the carpark. The teachers have to check under their cars before they take off! We hope he stays but we don't want him eating the veges in the garden.

We had Smudge, the lamb, come and visit us at school. He was hungry and some of us were able to feed him from his bottle.

THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER

Yesterday Bears performed their play, "The Ant and the Grasshopper."
Ant gets stuck on a rock in the middle of the river. Grasshopper has to go and ask all the animals for help. FInally tiger says he will move so mongoose can get the eggs. When mongoose moves from the well cobra can get a drink and then parrot can get the bananas. Parrot gives grasshopper a vine so she can help ant out of the river.
Bears did an awesome job on the play.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

On Thursday, 18th September Room 6 had some tennis coaching. Three coaches from Wakapuaka tennis club came and taught us some skills. We all did really well and improved in a short time. Lots of us are keen to have another go.

Hippo's Hiccups

Poor hippo has the hiccups. All the animals try to help him but it's crocodile who gets rid of hippo's hiccups by giving him a big fright!
Hippos reading group performed this play in Junior assembly and did a fantastic job. Well done.

PLAY TIME!

Today Tigers performed a play in Junior assembly. The play was "Home Comes the Hunter." All the children used very clear speaking voices and acted the play out so well. Great job!

Cross Country

Our school has just completed the cross country. We ran in our age groups. Lots of our families came to cheer us on. We all did really well and had lots of fun.

FITNESS

As part of our study on the Olympic Games we designed fitness

cards for our class to use. We decided to do a fitness circuit so

each group made

an activity for the circuit. We made cards explaining the activity and listing any equipment needed.

MASK MAKING

This term, in art, we are making masks. At the beginning of term 4 our school will be going in the Mask Parade. We are looking at using symmetry in masks.

We made these black and white masks this week.

WHAT A DRAMA!

There's been drama in Room 6! We've been writing about and dramatizing The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We've been practising our movements and facial expressions.We had some very fierce trolls!

Some of our reading groups have also been doing plays. One group did their play for the Junior assembly on Friday. It was a funny play called "No Excuse." The children all read with clear voices and expression. Carol was very proud of them.

Shazzlewogs

We have been designing homes for a shazzlewog.

Shazzlewogs are small pets. They are about 10 cm high, have short legs with three toes and have small wings but cannot fly. They have a trunk which they use for drinking water. When we designed a house for them we had to remember that they are shy and like a place to hide. Also, that they sleep in a nest and like to splash in water. Shazzlewogs eat carrots and like to climb.

Emma made this shazzlewog. You can tell it is a female because of its colours. Male shazzlewogs are purple and yellow.

We've had a great term Room 6. We've come a long way with learning to work together and get along with others.

KAKAPO

We have been on a Virtual Field Trip to learn about the kakapo. We have watched the scientists who work with these amazing birds through videos and diaries on the net. We learned lots about these endangered birds. Did you know . . .

Kakapo means "night parrot."
There are only 91 kakapo left in the world and they are only found in New Zealand.
The kakapo live on Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) which is an island near Stewart Island. This is the island we visited on our Virtual Tour. 16 kakapo live on Anchor Island.
Scientists have been trying to save the kakapo for years by helping look after them and learning about them.
Kakapo are nocturnal.
They feed on leaves, seeds, fruit and nuts.
The male kakapo makes a hollow and sits in it and booms trying to attract a female kakapo.
Only the mother kakapo look after the chicks.
The kakapo is the heaviest parrot in the world.
Kakapo cannot fly.
They can live to about 60 years old.
Kakao breed when there is lots of Rimu fruit. This only happens about every 20 years on Whenua Hou.
Females lay 2 to 4 eggs which take about 30 days to hatch.
7 chicks that hatched this year were taken to Nelson to be looked after. Some of us saw the chicks at the Brook Reserve.
Predators of the kakapo are cats, kiore (rats), stoats and possums. People have worked hard to get rid of these predators from the islands.
All kakapo have a microchip and a radio transmitter so scientists can keep track of them.

We hope scientists keep learning about the kakapo so they do not become extinct.

Folk Dance

On Friday we had our school folk dance display. Lots of family and friends came to watch us. Our class performed the Jiffy Mixer, a folk dance from America. We practised very hard to get the steps right and to keep in time. We also danced Jibidi, a folk dance from France, with the rest of the Junior school.

ELGREGOE

On Wednesday morning our class went with the rest of the school to see Elgregoe.

Elgregoe did amazing magic tricks. He made rabbits disappear and birds appear. He had a great macaw named Zaza. Elgregoe talked about how to make our school a great place to be by being students who are caring, honest, helpful, respectful, fair and responsible.

At the end he handcuffed Sue and put padlocks on this box. In 3 seconds she had the handcuffs off and was inside the box! It was an amazing show.

Wind Power

Today in Science we talked about the possible power cuts this winter. There is not enough water in the lakes to make power. We talked about why we use more power in winter and what we can do to save it.

We then looked at some pictures of wind farms and how they work. We made our own windmills using stiff paper, bamboo, beads and pins.

MANA - The Spirit of Polynesia

On Tuesday afternoon, we saw a cool and exciting dancer named Bernard Mangakahia. He has lived in many countries and knows many interesting dances. He showed us an American Indian Hoop Dance. During the dance he twirled around very fast. He made animal forms with the hoops. He made a butterfly, an eagle, a flower and some more. It took Bernard five years to learn to do the dance without falling over.

During the performance he changed costumes two times. He wore a Maori skirt called a pui pui and drew on his face to show us how a Maori tattoo looks. He led the whole school in a Humpty Dumpty haka.

He blew in a shell and we could feel it in our bodies. Two students from our class, Jacob and Millie, joined Bernard on stage.

We thought the performance was really great. We hope Bernard will come back to our school again.

Helicopters

This week in science we looked at the seeds of the sycamore tree. They have a wing on them and twirl down to the ground. We made our own helicopters from stiff card and flew them from the adventure playground. They flew better with a paper clip attached to the bottom.

Magnets

This week in science we experimented with magnets. We all thought that the magnets would be attracted to anything metal. But when we tried the magnets there were lots of metal things that they weren't attracted to. We're going to see if we can find out why.

FIZZ

We mixed some powders today and made sherbet. Here is the recipe we used (although we times it by 30!)

1 tablespoon icing sugar

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon citric acid

1 teaspoon jelly crystals.

Mix all the ingredients together until there are no lumps. Make sure you keep everything dry so there is no reaction before you eat it. Best eaten with a lollipop.

When the sherbet hits your mouth there is a chemical reaction with your saliva.

May 23rd

Today in Science we looked at "Splitting Inks." We each drew a snake with felt pens. We used lots of different colours. We then dipped our pictures in water and watched the ink spread. Different inks travel at different speeds making patterns. This is called chromatography.

We learned that our banknotes use special inks that are hard to copy. If the police suspect someone has made their own banknotes they can use a chromatography test to see what ink has been used.

SCIENCE

Every Friday we've been going to the science room to do different topics around science. This week we looked at crystals.

We dissolved washing soda in boiling water. We kept adding more and more washing soda until no more would dissolve. Then we hung a paper clip in the water and we're waiting for crystals to appear.
